Brice performed the removal of legacy incinerator ash and other related debris on Wake Island Airfield. Our scope of work included sampling of waste materials for disposal and transport and post-removal confirmation sampling.
Over the last 30 years, ash from both open burning and two incinerators had accumulated and spread at three specific areas in the Solid Waste Disposal Area (SWDA). We began removal at the Primary Area, working the piles west to east and then north to Bay 5 before continuing east back into the Primary Area. We loaded ash directly into 9-cy Supersacks for disposal and transport off island. Excavation continued to a depth of approximately 6 inches below ground surface. Large pieces of construction debris removed from the project excavation limits consisted of coral, concrete, aggregate, asphalt, metal, and timbers. We segregated and placed this debris in two open top containers.
To date, we have transported 383 Supersacks for disposal via barge. In 2021, we will transport the remaining 500 tons direct loaded onto the barge.
